Dr. Seyed Mahmoud Fatemi Aghda is a prominent professor and expert in engineering geology, disaster risk reduction, and environmental geosciences. With over three decades of experience, he has made significant contributions to scientific, research, and professional advancements in engineering geology and related fields.
He holds a Ph.D. in engineering preservation Environment, where he specialized in geological hazard analysis using multi-criteria evaluation techniques. He also earned a Master’s degree in Engineering Geology from Tarbiat Modares University and a Bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of Isfahan.
Dr. Fatemi Aghda is a full professor at Kharazmi University, where he teaches courses such as Advanced Engineering Geology, Soil Mechanics, Rock Mechanics, Seismic Geotechnics, Special Topics in Engineering Geology, Engineering Project Implementation, Geophysics, and Environmental Engineering Geology at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. To date, he has published over 130 papers in reputable national and international scientific journals and has authored six translated books and three original works, including Engineering Geology and Earthquake Hazards and Soil Mechanics for Geologists.
Beyond academia, Dr. Fatemi Aghda has held prominent leadership roles, including:
• President of the Iranian Natural Disaster Research Institute, where he developed strategic frameworks for risk reduction.
• CEO of Damavand Mining Company and Pichab Kavosh Company, leading innovative projects in mining and geotechnical engineering.
• Deputy Minister and President of the Building and Housing Research Center (BHRC) and the Road, Housing, and Urban Development Research Center, contributing to national policies on urban planning and seismic risk reduction.
He is the founder and board member of the Iranian Association for Engineering Geology and the Iranian Association for Crisis Management. Internationally, Dr. Fatemi Aghda has served as the Head of the Global Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction Secretariat in Iran (under the Kobe Framework, Japan) and as President of the Asian Center for Earthquake Risk Reduction.
Dr. Fatemi Aghda’s research focuses on urban seismic hazard zoning, geotechnical engineering, and the development of sustainable infrastructure. He also holds patents, including a device for measuring gravitational changes and polymeric materials for structural reinforcement.
As the editor-in-chief of several esteemed scientific journals, Dr. Fatemi Aghda continues to mentor the next generation of geologists and engineers while providing practical solutions to challenges in engineering geology.
